City Government Description
The Louisville Metro Government is a consolidated city–county government serving the residents of Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky. Established in 2003 through the merger of the City of Louisville and Jefferson County, the Metro Government operates under a mayor–council system. The Mayor serves as the chief executive, overseeing all departments and agencies, while the Metro Council—composed of 26 members elected from single-member districts—functions as the legislative body, passing ordinances, approving budgets, and representing constituent interests.
Key elements of the Metro Government include a robust network of departments handling public safety, infrastructure, public health, planning, and community services. Specialized agencies and boards, such as the Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, operate under the Metro umbrella. The government emphasizes citizen engagement through advisory commissions, town hall meetings, and digital platforms, ensuring transparency and responsiveness in policymaking and service delivery.
